Ahr

Main grape variety: Pinot Noir

Grape varieties: Pinot Noir (65%), Pinot Noir, Riesling

Cultivation area: Approx. 560 hectares

Climate: Mild, almost Mediterranean, protected by the Eifel

Number of winemakers: Approx. 40

International wine quality: Very well recognized for Pinot Noir, smaller export volume

Geography: Slate soils in the narrow river valley of the Ahr

Special feature: Most important red wine region in central Germany

Tourism: Around 150,000 visitors annually, popular for hikes, wine tastings and visits to the red wine hiking trail

Region & people: The people in the Ahr Valley are strongly connected to winemaking. There is a regional pride in the red wines, especially Pinot Noir. The region is characterized by small villages, steep vineyards and a close-knit community.

Baden

Climate: Warmest region in Germany, Mediterranean influences

Number of winemakers: Over 3,000

International wine quality: Highly valued Burgundy wines, significant export volume

Geography: Volcanic and loess soils, stretching from Lake Constance to Kraichgau

Special feature: Only region in the EU wine-growing zone B (milder climate)

Tourism: Approx. 1 million visitors annually, particularly popular for culinary wine tours and the Kaiserstuhl

Activities: wine hikes, cycling, Kaiserstuhl tours, wine festivals such as the Baden Wine Festival

Export volume/turnover: Strong export volume, approx. 200 million euros turnover annually

Region & people: The people of Baden are considered to be cheerful and pleasure-oriented. Wine and cuisine play a central role here, and the landscape is characterized by vineyards, orchards and old wine villages.

Tourism: Over 500,000 visitors annually, popular for visiting historic wineries and cities such as Würzburg

Activities: Wine festivals, Silvaner tours, hikes through the vineyards and Bocksbeutel tasting packages

Region & People: The Franconians are proud of their wine tradition and their warm, down-to-earth nature. The region is characterized by historic towns, castles and vineyards.

Region & people: The region is known for its idyllic landscapes and mild climate. The people are considered open and hospitable, and many wine festivals attract visitors every year.

Mittelrhein

Climate: Cool with warm summers, strongly influenced by the Moselle

Special feature: Oldest wine-growing region in Germany

Tourism: Approximately 2 million visitors annually, mainly influenced by wine tourism and river cruises

Activities: Wine hikes, boat trips on the Moselle, visits to Bernkastel-Kues and Trier

Export volume/turnover: Strong export, especially to the USA and Asia, turnover approx. 300 million euros annually

Region & People: The people of the Moselle are proud of their tradition and wine culture. The region is characterized by steep vineyards and picturesque villages along the Moselle.

Saar & Ruwer (parts of the Moselle)

Grape varieties: Riesling (over 80%), Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc

Cultivated area: Approx. 1,900 hectares (of which approx. 800 hectares on the Saar and approx. 110 hectares on the Ruwer)

Climate: Cooler than on the Moselle, very influenced by the river climate, with warm days and cool nights

Number of winemakers: Approx. 200 wineries (mostly small wineries)

International wine quality: Highly appreciated, elegant and mineral Rieslings, worldwide export

Geography: Steep slate slopes along the rivers Saar and Ruwer, characterized by rough soils and cool microclimate

Special feature: Famous Rieslings with long storage capacity and pronounced minerality; cooler growing area compared to the Mosel

Tourism: Approximately 200,000 visitors annually, particularly popular with wine lovers and hikers

Activities: Hiking along the Saar and Ruwer, wine tastings in renowned wineries, visits to historical places such as Trier and Saarburg

Export volume/turnover: Moderate export volume, especially to Great Britain, USA and Asia; approx. 80 million euros turnover annually

Region & people: The people of the Saar and Ruwer are strongly connected to nature and winemaking. The region is rural and quiet, with small villages and a long winemaking tradition. Winemakers and wine lovers appreciate the special minerality and freshness of the Saar and Ruwer Rieslings.

Region & people: The people of Württemberg are tradition-conscious and attached to their homeland. They enjoy their red wines and celebrate their wine culture with numerous festivals.
